Engagement rings

How long does it take to custom-make an engagement ring?

The average timeframe is usually six weeks from initial consultation and deposit payment to delivery of your finished piece, noting this timeframe may be longer for complex designs. We provide rush services whenever possible, though fees may apply.

How much does an engagement ring cost?

The price of an A.G engagement ring primarily depends on the choice of centre stone, as well as the complexity of design, metal choice and complementing diamonds. Our engagement ring classics page and ring builder provide approximate price guides for different ring styles. For pricing of other designs, we welcome you to book an appointment (email info@agdesignerjeweller.com or call (07) 3210 0213) or send us an email with the specifications you are considering so we can provide you with a quote and further information.

Do you make gemstone engagement rings as well as diamond engagement rings?

Absolutely. The A.G team has a passion for coloured gemstones as well as diamonds. A.G engagement rings often feature coloured sapphires as the centre stone or as side stones. We recommend only diamonds or sapphires are set in engagement rings given their durability and hardness making them suitable for everyday wear.

A wide range of sapphires are available in-store in an array of colours, shapes, and sizes. Our gemstone specialists can also source the finest loose sapphires from across the world on request. We’d be honoured to help you select and showcase the perfect sapphire in an A.G engagement ring.

How do I choose a metal for my engagement ring?

A.G rings are usually made in either 18 carat gold (white gold, yellow gold or rose gold) or platinum. We understand deciding which metal will suit you or your partner best can be a little overwhelming. Our guide includes detailed information regarding the different metals we use in the A.G workshop and their relative pros and cons from our experience, which may assist you in your decision. Of course, our A.G experts will also talk you through the options during a consultation and help you decide based on your personal preference and lifestyle factors.

How do I determine my partner’s ring size to buy an engagement ring if I want to keep it a secret?

We suggest finding a ring your partner wears either on their left ring finger (finger next to your pinky finger is traditionally the engagement and wedding ring finger) or their right ring finger, and measuring it on our ring sizing guide.

It’s even better if you’re able to sneak the ring for a day and bring it in-store to be sized. Alternatively, we may be able to estimate your partner’s finger size if you’re able to bring a photo of your partner’s hand to your design consultation. If neither of these options are possible, most A.G rings can be re-sized if required following your proposal, and this is complimentary.

How and when do I pay for my engagement ring?

We offer the following methods of payment: card (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX), Apple pay, cash, and direct debit. A 50% deposit is generally required to secure your centre stone and to begin the design process. The remaining 50% is due prior to the delivery of your ring.

What is the process to have my engagement ring re-sized?

We provide complimentary engagement ring re-sizing at A.G. Please make an appointment for any required re-sizing.

In terms of fit, your ring should be just large enough to go over your knuckle but fit snug enough once on your finger to avoid shifting side to side or falling off. If you find your ring is rotating despite being the right size, our jewellers can also place tiny gold spheres on the inside of your ring to make it feel more snug and to prevent it from rotating on your finger.

Wedding rings

Do you offer other designs in addition to those on your website?

Yes, we have an extensive selection of women’s and men’s wedding bands in-store and also offer custom-made wedding bands and plain bands.

There are many ways to personalise your wedding bands such as by engraving, adding additional diamonds or gemstones, or mixing metal types. Our expert jewellers can also fit your wedding band to your engagement ring if you’d like this.

How long does it take to custom-make a wedding ring?

The average timeframe is usually four to six weeks from initial consultation and deposit payment to delivery of your finished wedding bands. We provide rush services whenever possible, though fees may apply.

How do I choose a metal for my wedding ring?

Women’s A.G wedding rings are usually made in either 18 carat gold (white gold, yellow gold or rose gold) or platinum.

Men’s wedding bands are usually made in either 9 carat or 18 carat gold (white gold, yellow gold or rose gold), platinum, zirconium or mokume. It is also possible to use a combination of metals.

Our A.G experts can show you the different options during a consultation and help you choose the perfect metal for your wedding rings.

What is the process to have my wedding ring re-sized?

We provide complimentary re-sizing for A.G wedding rings, however, please note some rings may be unable to be resized, such as full diamond bands. Please make an appointment for any required re-sizing.

In terms of fit, your ring should be just large enough to go over your knuckle but fit snug enough once on your finger to avoid shifting side to side or falling off.

Do I wear my engagement or wedding ring first on my left ring finger?

Traditionally your wedding ring is worn first on your left ring finger (finger next to your pinky finger) once married, and your engagement ring second. The idea is that your wedding ring is closest to your heart. Nowadays people wear their rings in whichever order they prefer, and some people even choose to wear them separately, one on each hand.

Caring for your jewellery

How can I clean my A.G jewellery?

We encourage you to have your A.G jewellery serviced every six months so our jewellers can check the security of your setting (to ensure the safety of your diamonds/gemstones), rhodium plate white gold pieces if required, clean and polish your jewellery. This service is complimentary.

You’re also welcome to bring your A.G jewellery in for a complimentary clean and polish in between six-monthly services.

If you find yourself longing for a little more shine while at home, you can use a simple solution of warm water, dishwashing liquid and a soft cloth or extra soft bristle toothbrush (used very gently to ensure no unnecessary pressure is put on your setting).

Why do white gold rings require rhodium plating?

In its natural form, gold is a soft, yellow coloured metal. You’ll hear gold discussed in terms of 24 parts or carats. For jewellery purposes, gold is always made into an alloy, meaning it is combined with other metals to establish strength and to achieve desired colour properties.

At A.G, we use 18ct gold for our engagement rings meaning the ratio of the alloy is 18 parts gold mixed with other metals. All A.G white gold rings use a premium nickel-free 18ct white gold which includes palladium content making the metal closer to a true white than alloys used in less premium white golds. Despite this, as white gold has a slight off-white colour, we rhodium plate our white gold rings to brighten the metal colour and to increase the durability and lustre of the metal.

Rhodium is a hard, bright white metal from the platinum family with a vivid mirror finish. Rhodium plating is the application of a very thin coating of this rhodium metal to the surface of a white gold ring via an electroplating process, giving the white gold an ultra-white colour. Rest assured, rhodium plating is hypoallergenic.

Rhodium plating wears off over time and will need to be re-applied through the life of a white gold piece. Typically, an A.G ring needs to be re-plated once every 12 to 18 months, however this can vary depending on how the ring is worn and what the wearer does. The A.G team can determine when rhodium plating is required when servicing your piece (servicing is recommended every six months or so). Many jewellers charge for rhodium plating however this is complimentary for A.G clients.

Can I wear my A.G ring daily?

You can wear your A.G engagement and wedding rings daily, however, we suggest keeping a few things in mind to maintain the integrity of your piece.

We highly recommend you avoid impact, pressure, extreme temperatures and physical compounds or chemicals on your rings and other precious A.G pieces. We strongly suggest you avoid wearing your rings when working out with gym equipment particularly if lifting weights, carrying heavy loads, gardening, etc.

We suggest you check your ring regularly for any changes and recommend you bring your A.G jewellery in-store every six months for a complimentary service. If you notice any changes in the meantime, such as a claw snagging on your clothing, please also bring your piece in-store and our jewellers will look at this for you while you wait.
